LOOK: Meet the World's Largest Natural Pearl Found in the Philippines!

Every Filipino is very familiar to the country's nickname "Pearl of the Orient." This phrase has been coined to the Philippines by Dr. Jose Rizal because the Spaniards during their colonization were truly amazed at the beauty of the country, just like a pearl.

Knowing from its nickname, do you know that there are giant pearls from giant clams found in the Philippine waters? Actually, all recorded giant pearls in the world came solely from the country itself, specifically in Palawan.

The latest and thought to be the largest right now was found along the coasts of Palawan in 2006. The said giant pearl was only revealed on August 22, 2016. The huge pearl was found by a fisherman who threw off his anchor and got wedged on a rock during a storm, according to Tourism officer Aileen Cynthia Amurao. It is thought to be five times bigger than the previous record held by the Pearl of Allah, which was also found near the Palawan island in 1939.

"(But) We believe Puerto Princesca is likely to earn another prestigious title and a record breaker for having the world's biggest natural giant pearl from a giant clam. We will keep this here in the Philippines and I hope it will bring more tourists to the city," said the Tourism officer.

The officer is also requesting a help for a gemologist to verify the authenticity of the giant pearl.

On the other hand, according to ITV News, the officer added that she strongly dishearten the locals in getting giant clams just to get giant pearls as it may affect the total biodiversity of the island.
